What Is the GLA:D® Program?

GLA:D® (Good Life with osteoArthritis in Denmark) is an evidence-based education and exercise program originally developed in Denmark and now used around the world, including Canada through GLA:D Canada.

This program is specifically designed for people with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis and focuses on improving function, reducing pain, and delaying or preventing surgery through guided, targeted exercises and education.

Who Can Benefit from GLA:D®?

The GLA:D® program is ideal for individuals who:

  • Have hip or knee osteoarthritis symptoms (pain, stiffness, or reduced function).

  • Want to delay or avoid joint replacement surgery.

  • Are looking for a safe, structured, and effective way to strengthen their joints and improve mobility.

You do not need a doctor's referral to participate, but you may use your extended health benefits for physiotherapy coverage.

What to Expect in the Program

Education Sessions

  • 2 education sessions to learn about osteoarthritis and how it affects your joints
  • Understand how exercise and self-management strategies can reduce symptoms and improve daily function

Supervised Exercise Classes

  • Two 1-hour long group classes per week for 6 weeks
  • Focus on neuromuscular exercises that improve strength, control, and confidence in movement
  • Progressions are tailored to your ability and comfort level

Progress Tracking & Results

  • Participants complete standardized outcome measures at the start and end of the program to monitor changes in pain, function, and quality of life.

When does the program run?

Our next GLA:D Program is scheduled to run from January 13, 2026 - February 26, 2026.
Sessions are are one-hour long on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4-5pm.

How much does the program cost?

The total cost of the GLA:D® program at Flex Physio & Wellness is $700. This includes all 14 sessions (2 education sessions and 12 exercise sessions) at a cost of $50 per session.

Is the program covered by insurance?

The GLA:D program is covered by most insurance plans under physiotherapy! Because coverage details can vary, we recommend checking with your provider to confirm your specific plan details.
We also offer direct billing to most insurance companies to make the process as easy as possible for you.

What happens if I miss a session?

Life happens — we completely understand! To support your success, our certified physiotherapist will offer one complimentary make-up session after the program wraps up for anyone who misses a class.
Please note that we do require a credit card on file, and missed sessions beyond the one included make-up are non-refundable.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

No, a referral is not required to participate in the GLA:D® program at Flex Physio & Wellness.

How many participants are in the program?

The program can accommodate up to a maximum of 10 participants. Specific program numbers will depend on how many participants sign up. Typical program sizes are 4-6 participants.

Will the program be tailored to my ability level?

Absolutely! The exercises are designed to be adaptable. Your physiotherapist will progress or modify activities to match your comfort level and functional goals.

Can the GLA:D® program help me avoid surgery?

Research has shown that many participants experience significant pain reduction and improved function, which can delay or even prevent the need for joint replacement surgery.
